Devin Smith to Perform at "Silence is Violence: Liberation" Event

We are thrilled to announce that Ship and Anchor CEO Devin Smith will be performing at the "Silence is Violence: Liberation" event hosted by the Young Playwrights' Theater. Using the stage name "Dev D'Ryan", Devin will perform 3 original songs from his award-winning documentary short film Letters from America's 3rd World. Immediately following he will speak as a panelist discussing the use of art for liberation.

About the Event

"Silence is Violence: Liberation" is a curated open mic event that invites youth and adult audience members to explore what liberation means to them. This event is a unique opportunity for individuals to share their stories, experiences, and perspectives through various forms of art, including spoken word, poetry, music, and more. Other performances include devoted DC community leader and renown poet Gene Downing, also known as "Big Gee Da Poet", and 3 short plays from talented DC playwrights and graduating seniors from Howard University's Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts.

Devin's Performance

Continuing the Reimagining America's 3rd World initiative, with this performance Devin will highlights key moments of his reentry journey that shed light on the often interconnected roles of healing, liberation, and agency in restorative approaches to repairing community harm.

"I hope the takeaway from my performances, and the show in general, is that art stretches the muscle of imagination - music, theater, poetry, etc. - and can fuel the innovation needed in the work of making communities whole again," remarks Smith.
